The atmospheric waves--referred to as infrasound--were detected across a range of inaudible frequencies and were observed at great distances on infrasound microphones. Infrasound sensors measure changes in the atmosphere generated by very-low-frequency acoustic waves that can come from above-ground nuclear explosions. As part of the system, a WC-135 aircraft flies USGS, the U.S. National Science Foundation and an organization called the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology formed the international system, which has more than 150 seismic stations around the world. Press Release – Institute of Environmental Science And Research. "These recordings of seismic waves through the Earth, and sound waves through the atmosphere, are good examples of how these facilities can help global organizations better monitor earthquakes, clandestine nuclear tests and other threats." Incoming! These low-frequency sounds are detectable at great distances and are little affected by passage through the atmosphere. Infrasound sensors are also non-intrusive when compared to aerial monitoring. Estas fórmulas son las recomendadas por la AFTAC (United States Air Force Technical Applications Center) y aparecen en el libro de A. Le Pichon et al., “Infrasound Monitoring for Atmospheric Studies,” Springer, 2010.
